Did some work with the TIE fighter model today. In addition to testing the flight animations, I set up the laser cannons as well.

A still shot of the TIE fighter firing its laser cannons over a planet. I put the planet in for some background. I threw it together quickly. For the actual production shots I'll be making better looking planets but I didn't want to invest the time in that right now. I'm working on more destructive portions of the project now (crashes, explosions etc) so hopefully it will result in some interesting clips in the near future

The animations are beginning to get a little more interesting.
Here is a test shot of a TIE Fighter crashing into a support structure. This is the early stage of crashing vehicles and I'm only testing the disintegration of the vehicle. Explosions and fire and smoke come later.

Test shot of TIE Fighter leaving Star Destroyer hangar. This clip also has sound. I'm having an issue with the Final gather settings which is causing the flickering you see when the hangar bay is in view in the first part of the video

Updated some of my software, now running 3ds Max 2012. They have added some nice features including a couple of new rendering options. Here is a quick render of a TIE Fighter using the iray render option. It basically allows you to create scenes with realistic lighting in one pass instead of several.

Looks nice. Bit suprised they now have programs that render like that in one pass on the commercial market.

yeah, the software is really getting better and better. You can focus on the project rather than worrying about all the technical aspects.
iray isn't the solution all of the time, but it really can help speed up things for scenes that can use it.
